Preseason Tune Up

Hello nighthawk families and fans,

On Saturday we had our first meet of the season at Otay Ranch High School. This was just a preseason meet to give new athletes the opportunity to compete and returners a chance to get back into the competitive environment. Find the full meet results here on athletic.net and keep reading for more highlights. If you are new to athletic.net and confused on how it works, scroll down on this past newsletter where we give a bit of a walkthrough of the site.

Athletes of the Meet

After each meet, we want to take the time to highlight a couple of athletes who had spectacular performances.

High Jump -

  • Melia Naigan (10) started off the season with a huge 4 inch PR, with a jump of 4’10”.

Sprints -

  • Zoe Delgado (9) in her first ever track meet, ran the 2nd fastest 100 meter time among all freshmen girls, with an impressive 13.58 then came back to run the fastest 200 among Del Norte freshmen girls with a 28.87.

  • Ryan Remigio (11) after training all off season, came out strong with the overall win in the 100 (11.47) and 2nd overall in the 200 with a new PR of 23.29, half a second faster than his previous best. All of the work he put in ahead of the season is already paying off.

Hurdles -

  • Tristan Kyle (11) in his first track meet ever, came back from high jump just in time and insisted on still racing the 300 hurdles. With little to no practice he not only won his heat but hurdled incredibly well finishing off with the 4th fastest time of the day overall. There is a lot more to come from this new hurdler.

Distance -

  • Savannah Harpster (9) kicked off her track career with a very impressive 800 and 4x400 double. Her fearless mentality was in full effect when she immediately took the lead against Varsity competition. Her finish really displayed her strength as she passed two girls to run an incredible time of 2:34.

  • Nolan Hightower (9) impressed us all with a great double in his first ever meet. His 5:28 in the 1600 is a testament to all the hard work he put in the winter. We’re looking forward to seeing his progression over the span of the season.

Congratulations to all of those athletes on a great meet. We would like to take the time to recognize those athletes whose performance landed them onto our top 10 all-time lists. Because they did not have a wind-gauge at this meet, our sprinters and jumpers performances cannot be counted towards school records and all-time performances. We know they have it in them and will be able to even surpass these marks in future competitions!

  • Melia Naigan (10) girls high jump: Tied for 7th All-Time with a jump of 4’10”

Each of these athletes have made a great impact on our program, making themselves known as some of the best in their event since our school opened in 2009. We look forward to witnessing their continued success as the season goes on.

This Week

After ski week break, we will all be back and athletes are expected to be at practice everyday 4:10-6pm. All athletes should have their spikes (sprinters/hurdlers check this page out for more info)

Our next meet is this Saturday for the Mt Carmel Field & Distance Carnival (more info here). As the name suggests only field and distance athletes will be competing, so sprinters & hurdlers will have the weekend off.

There will be an optional hurdle practice on Saturday at 8:00 am more info here.

House Keeping

  • Our team store is only open for a few more days (closing Friday)! Purchase the 2024 team shirt, warm up sweats/jackets, extra race shorts and more here.

  • Calling all SENIORS! submit your senior bio to be put up on our website. Fill out this form ASAP and check out last year’s senior bios to get an idea of what this will look like!

Donate your used spikes to a Nighthawk in need!

  • If your athlete has spikes from last season that aren’t super torn up, they can use them again. If they are getting new spikes and don’t need their old ones, feel free to bring them to practice and we can share them with another nighthawk in need! Once your athlete gets their spikes, have them show their coach before wearing them at practice. We can help navigate each athletes needs.
