The Season Has Begun

Hello nighthawk families and fans,

Over the weekend we had our first meet of the season! We headed just down the road to Canyon Crest Academy for a pre season tri-meet against CCA and Otay Ranch. It was a great preview of what our Nighthawks have in store for the rest of the season. Lots of first time races and a ton of PRs! Find the full meet results here. Next weekend we have two invite meets, more information below. Keep reading for some highlights from the meet.

Athletes of the Meet -

We want to take the time to highlight a couple of athletes who had spectacular performances at our Mira Mesa Dual meet.

Jumps -

  • Vicky Akinpelu (12) came back stronger this year, opening the season with 15’7.75” in Long Jump and a second place finish. This is nearly half a foot over her previous best.

Sprints -

  • Kyle Pastrano (12) opens his senior season with a stellar 3rd place overall finish in the 100m with a PR of 11.68, as well as a PR in the 200m with 24.25. He also was lead off lead for the boys 4x1, and filled in for the mixed 4x4

  • Samantha Tseng (9) starts her young track career with a 14.61 time in the 100m, finishing as the fastest freshman in the race! She also finished as the 3rd fastest freshman in the 200m running 30.95 and running leadoff leg for our all freshman girls 4x1!

Hurdles -

  • Alex Guerra (12) opening up the season with a double PR both a second or more. From 18.01—>16.81 and 43.58—>42.48. Very excited for what’s in store for his senior season.

Distance -

  • Asher Sikma (9) had a great season opener this weekend where he joined the sub 5 minute mile club in his very first mile as a Nighthawk. He ran a time of 4:56 and came back with a strong 800 leg in his 4x800 relay.

  • Addison Lane (11) opened up her season with a strong time of 2:43 in her individual 800. Then came back on short notice for the 4x800 where she ran the same time again showing off her fitness.

Our Next Meets

This weekend we have two meets. Field and Distance at Mt Carmel (more information here) and Viking Sunset Relays at La Jolla High School (more information here). Weekend invitationals are more competitive/higher level meets for our Varsity level athletes. We enter athletes and they must qualify/be accepted into the meet by the meet director. For this reason we bring a much more limited number of athletes to these meets.

House Keeping

  • Calling all SENIORS! submit your senior bio to be put up on our website. Fill out this form ASAP and check out last year’s senior bios to get an idea of what this will look like!

Donate your used spikes to a Nighthawk in need!

  • If your athlete has spikes from last season that aren’t super torn up, they can use them again. If they are getting new spikes and don’t need their old ones, feel free to bring them to practice and we can share them with another nighthawk in need! Once your athlete gets their spikes, have them show their coach before wearing them at practice. We can help navigate each athletes needs.
