Welcome Back to Track!
Hello nighthawk families and fans,
Happy (almost) spring! We want to wish you a warm welcome back to Track Season! As you all know by now, track season has begun again with our first official practice of the season taking place on Monday February 13th. If your athlete is still competing in a winter sport at del norte (like soccer, wrestling, etc.) don’t worry. They can finish out their season with them and come join us once their season has ended. We practice from 4:10pm-6:10pm Monday-Friday, practice is mandatory.
House Keeping
There are a few things to have squared away before you athlete can practice and compete with us.
Make sure they are cleared through dragonfly. More info on that can be found here.
Read, print & sign our team rules and varsity letter requirements. Bring this to the next practice and hand to one of our coaches.
If your athlete has another activity (tutoring, a club, flute practice, etc.) that conflicts with practice time or any of our meets, please have them fill out an outside activity contract and bring it to practice so our head coach can sign off on it. Find our meet schedule here.
Gear
We want to make sure all of our nighthawks have access to the gear they need to be successful in our sport. Luckily, track & field does not require a ton of gear. Here is what they need.
Water bottle - please make sure they are hydrating throughout the day and bringing a full bottle to practice.
Running shoes - they don’t have to be brand new or top of the line, but having proper foot support is important and will help avoid injury. If you are in the market for new shoes, we suggest visiting Fleet Feet in carmel valley. They offer a student discount for nighthawk athletes.
Comfortable running clothes - t-shirts, shorts, leggings, whatever is comfortable for them to move and run in. Please encourage your athletes to come with a pair of sweatpants and a jacket to have in case of a temperature drop. Especially in the beginning of season it gets cold once the sun sets and if their legs aren’t kept warm they are at risk of injury.
Spikes (or competition shoes) - There are a variety of spikes & competition shoes available for track & field athletes. We will have a representative from Fleet Feet coming to practice next week to explain the types of shoes they offer and what to look for depending on your event and experience. If your athlete has spikes from last season that aren’t super torn up, they can use them again. If they are getting new spikes and don’t need their old ones, feel free to bring them to practice and we can share them with another nighthawk in need! Once your athlete gets their spikes, have them show their coach before wearing them at practice. We can help navigate each athletes needs.
First Meet
Our first meet is coming up soon on Thursday February 16th. We will be competing against Mission Hills and Orange Glen at Orange Glen High School. This is a very relaxed first meet as a way for new athletes to get a feel for a track meet and for returners to shake of some rust. Students athletes competing will be released early from class and ride the bus to and from the meet. Find more info about that meet here.
Meet our Coaches
We are lucky to have a great team of coaches leading our student athletes and would love to introduce them to you. They have a variety of backgrounds and experience to share with your nighthawks. Follow us on instagram to keep up to date with our team and to meet more of our coaching staff!
